Kharphocho Fort; King of Forts
KHARPHOCHO Fort is an ancient architectural marvel located in Skardu. From the top of the fort, one can enjoy panoramic views of the entire Skardu city. Kharpocho Fort, also known as Skardu Fort, is situated in the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan. The term Kharpocho means “King of Forts” in Balti, and this magnificent structure is a must-visit destination for tourists.
Location of Kharphocho Fort
The fort stands at a height of about 40-50 meters above the city, on a mountain. It is situated on the bank of the Indus river, and the junction point of the Shigar river and the Indus river is located nearby.
Kharphocho Fort History
The fort was built in the early 16th century by King Bogha, the Raja of Skardu. Later on, by the end of the 16th century, King Ali Sher Khan Anchan, a Muslim ruler, extended the fort.
Over the years, the fort was used as a military stronghold during various wars. During the war against the Dogra, who were the rulers of the region during the partition of the subcontinent, local forces realized the strategic location of the fort in the town. They occupied the fort to keep an eye on the entrance and exit points of Skardu city.
An Ideal Tourist Destination
Nowadays, the fort is open to tourists. Visitors need to climb to the top of the mountain where the fort is located. The old-fashioned infrastructure of the fort includes dozens of small and large rooms covered by a large boundary wall. The fort’s massive stones and gravels have been artistically used in the development of the boundary walls. The itinerary of the fort is studiously kept narrow and steep to save it from burglars and infiltrators.
Although many of the large rooms were burnt out in the war of 1948 in Gilgit Baltistan, the magnificent fort still stands, attracting thousands of tourists all year round. The fort’s secret tunnel is another intriguing feature. The Rajas of that time built a secret tunnel under the mountains, connecting the town and the fort. The tunnel was used during the war zone, and the royal families were unaware of its existence. Visitors can see the tunnel during their visit to the fort.
A National Asset
In conclusion, Kharpocho Fort is a fascinating and historic attraction that should not be missed by anyone visiting Skardu.
